With the rise of video marketing platforms, knowing how to get your information across via video is becoming increasingly important. You can touch a wide audience net with video and video-friendly platforms like: YouTube, Instagram, Vine, and Facebook.
Whether you’re using video to explain a product or market a service, you’ll need to be camera-ready. You’re the face of your company. You want to put your best foot forward.
The camera doesn’t pick up on subtleties and nuances, so over-exaggerate everything you do. Speak loudly, articulate your words, increase your volume, and overemphasize your gestures—it may seem strange but this will all look great on film.
If you’re not a natural in front of the camera—fake it! To exude more confidence, articulate your words, speak loudly, and have good posture. These are just a few small things that can help you seem more confident on camera. To help keep your posture properly aligned, stand-up against a wall and push your shoulders and head against it, and maintain that posture while you’re in front the camera.
Avoid stark white, bright yellows and all black outfits. Avoid distracting patterns like polka dots, plaids, and anything that will reflect too much light. Avoid shiny jewelry as well. Be sure that the clothes you do wear are comfortable so that you can feel confident while making your video.
Write out your script and rehearse beforehand—this can help prevent rambling and going off on a tangent. Audiences typically have short attention spans, so the more efficiently you can convey your message—the better. If you’re answering questions in an interview try to answer in one or two bullet points and make sure the most powerful answer/statement comes first.
The camera is your audience, so be sure to look into it for the duration of your video. If you want to practice maintaining eye contact before shooting your video, draw a circle on a post-it and practice speaking while focusing on the circle. This exercise can help you feel comfortable focusing on one area while speaking.
This may sound like it’s contradicting some of our previous tips, but it’s important to be yourself (just the slightly louder and more articulate version). People can sense when you are being inauthentic, so stay true to your own personality.
Utilizing video is a great way to market your product, service or company. With the rise of video marketing and visual media, creating engaging video content is becoming increasingly important. Use the tips above to get camera-ready for your next business video.
